Dr. Andrew Johnson giving a tour of the Roman Forum to 2024 Field School Students.
Living near Rome for five weeks is one of the great perks of working with The Gabii Project. Once the center of the known world, the city has maintained this ancient identity even as it has evolved to match the standards of modernity. Now a bastion of culture spanning millennia, Rome provides unparalleled access to countless famous churches, basilicas, piazzas, fountains, ruins, museums and more, alongside some of the best shopping and cuisine in the world.
During the field program, students live in Frascati, a town in the Metropolitan Area of Rome. Frascati is located 20 kilometers (12 mi) south-east of Rome, on the Alban Hills, close to the ancient city of Tusculum. The community is closely associated with science, being the location of several international scientific laboratories. Frascati is also famous for its restaurant scene and vineyards producing the white wine with the same name.
Housing in double bedrooms is arranged by the Centro Giovanni XXII. The residence is located at a short distance from the town’s historic and artistic center (a 15-minute walk) . Frascati’s train station, which offers direct rides to Rome Termini station (the journey takes approximately 30 minutes), thus providing easy access to several major attractions including the Campo de’ Fiori, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.
